Everything you need to know about ABS sheets — from cutting and forming to choosing the right thickness.
ABS (Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene) is a tough, rigid thermoplastic known for excellent impact resistance and ease of machining. It's the same material used in LEGO bricks, automotive trim, and appliance housings.
Yes. ABS is thermoformable — it softens at around 220°F (105°C) and can be vacuum-formed, drape-formed, or bent with a heat gun or strip heater. It holds its shape once cooled.
ABS cuts easily with a table saw, circular saw, jigsaw, or CNC router. Use fine-toothed blades designed for plastic. For thin sheets (1/16"), a sharp utility knife and straight edge works well.
1/16" is ideal for lightweight covers, vacuum forming, and hobby projects. 1/8" works well for enclosures, panels, and moderate structural applications. 1/4" provides maximum rigidity for machine guards, heavy-duty enclosures, and structural components.
Yes — ABS accepts spray paint, acrylic paint, and vinyl wrap. It bonds well with ABS cement (solvent welding), cyanoacrylate (super glue), and two-part epoxy.
ABS is not UV-stable and will degrade with prolonged sun exposure. For outdoor applications, consider UV-stabilized ABS, or use a UV-resistant clear coat. For outdoor transparent applications, cast acrylic is a better choice.
